FARMERS INSURED is a newly
set-up non-profit initiative
dedicated to helping smallholder farmers in Africa secure their futures through innovative parametric insurance solutions. We leverage private and philanthropic capital to provide essential financial protection against climate risks, ensuring that farmers can continue to thrive even in the face of unpredictable weather.
Whilst working on launching myUbuntu Insurance in Zimbabwe, I realised that in parallel with the commercial activity, a non-profit initiative was needed to support the awareness and the financing of insurance premiums to truly support farmers in building their resilience to climate-change, to enable the transformation of agriculture and to secure livelihoods.

Our Story
Farmers Insured was born out of the recognition that traditional insurance models are often inaccessible to the farmers who need them most. With climate change intensifying the risks faced by smallholder farmers, we saw the urgent need for a new approach—one that leverages technology and philanthropy to provide timely, reliable financial protection.
48
Billion
in Annual Agricultural
Losses
Sub-Saharan Africa experiences up to $48 billion in agricultural losses each year due to climate-related events like droughts, floods, and erratic rainfall. These losses directly affect the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, who rely on agriculture as their primary source of income.
Over 33 Million
Smallholder Farmers
at Risk
More than 33 million smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa are at severe risk of climate change impacts, with many lacking access to insurance or financial safety nets. These farmers, who typically live on less than $2 a day, face devastating consequences when their crops fail due to extreme weather events.
$100 Billion
in Untapped Agricultural Potential
Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to generate an additional $100 billion annually if climate risks are managed effectively and farmers have access to financial tools like insurance. Unlocking this potential could transform the region’s economy, lifting millions out of poverty and ensuring food security for future generations.

Awareness
We empower farmers by providing them with the knowledge they need to protect their livelihoods. Through educational programs, community workshops, and media campaigns, we raise awareness about the benefits of parametric insurance and how it can provide financial security in the face of climate-related risks.
Access
We break down barriers to access, ensuring that all farmers, regardless of their location or financial situation, can benefit from parametric insurance. By partnering with local institutions and leveraging technology, we make it easier for farmers to enrol in insurance programs that protect their crops, livestock, and livelihoods.
Investment
We believe that strong communities build strong futures. That’s why we invest in projects that not only protect farmers but also enhance the resilience of entire communities. From irrigation systems to sustainable farming practices, our investments help create environments where agriculture can thrive despite the challenges posed by climate change.
Mission
Our mission is to empower smallholder farmers by providing them with the financial tools they need to overcome climate challenges and build sustainable livelihoods.
Vision
We envision a future where no farmer is left behind, where access to insurance is universal, and where agricultural communities are resilient and thriving.
Purpose
We aim to increase the accessibility of insurance for farmers, ensuring that adverse weather events don’t lead to financial ruin. By doing so, we contribute to the broader goals of food security, poverty reduction, and economic stability in Africa.
